Several thousand people are petitioning a Connecticut nightclub to cancel an upcoming performance by rocker Ted Nugent after he referred to Trayvon Martin as a “dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe.”
Nugent made the remark last month in anop-ed praising the jury for acquitting George Zimmerman in the Florida teen’s shooting death. He was castigating President Barack Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder and everyone else who “refus[ed] to admit that the 17-year-old dope smoking, racist gangsta wannabe Trayvon Martin was at all responsible for his bad decisions and standard modus operendi of always taking the violent route.”
Barbara Fair told WFSB-TV she opposes Nugent appearing at Toad’s Place in New Haven, Conn. and has 3,000 signatures asking the venue to pull his Tuesday show — even if they know that at this point it’s probably futile.
“We know at this point he’s not going to cancel,” Fair told the station. “We don’t expect him to cancel. At least listen to the voices in the community who frequent your club all the time.”
Toad’s Place did not comment to WFSB.
